Preliminary Self Evaluation - Monsur

In the preliminary task, we were asked to demonstrate the knowledge of different camera shots and use them effectively. We also edited our video clip using the software iMovie, and we included editing techniques, such as jump cut, where our actor Faheem is walking through the corridor, and match-on-action, when Faheem opens the door. Furthermore, we have demonstrated the 180 degree rule, as our characters always have the same left/right relationship to each other.

While filming the preliminary task, we used different props, such as playing cards and a mobile phone. During the editing of the film we added a black and white effect for the flashback scene. The dialogue in the film gave the audience an understanding of what our film was about.

During the construction of the movie, I have learnt many different skills while recording. I have learnt how to zoom in and out steadily and to keep the panning steady. I have kept the camera still when it was necessary. I have learnt how to use the different camera shots effectively. For example, we used a close-up shot of Jabed’s face to emphasise the importance of him, and we used a long shot to emphasise the setting of our film.

My most significant contribution to the film was the dialogue. I wrote it out and made sure that all the members of the group were happy with the script. Then I made a personal copy of the dialogue for both of the actors and I helped them practice their lines so they got it right for the film. Also, I have helped to edit the film with Faheem.

For the main task, I would set some targets for the group to rectify problems. One target I would set would be to film a scene about four times, instead of the two times we did, so that we can choose which clip is the best out of the four and add that clip to the film. Also, the location we used for our preliminary task could have been better because the environment was quite loud and it was hard to hear the dialogue. I would suggest our group to use a better location for the setting, where the environment is quiet and the lighting is perfect.
